Art that Honors Wellness Stories
We celebrate everything from movie-making to being a parent. But where's the party when someone makes a major effort to get well?
Overcoming health problems can be life-changing. I feel passionate about this because as a young adult I very deliberately conquered severe depression that started when I was 11 and lasted 17 years. The experience taught me that I could accomplish much more than I could ever have imagined.
But I didn’t talk about it. As the decades rolled by, I rarely even thought about it. In the last few years, I started to wonder how I could go through such a dramatic shift and keep it to myself.
We occasionally hear about a celebrity who has faced down physical or mental illness (Angelina Jolie gets a double mastectomy! Catherine Zeta-Jones has bipolar disorder!), but in everyday life we rarely talk about our health struggles. Of course both Ms. Jolie and Ms. Zeta-Jones should be honored for their courage in facing their personal battles. But the rest of us deserve to be honored also.
So this has become my mission—to honor wellness stories through my art.
